This film is about an overweight medical student named Marty from Louisville, KY who travels to San Francisco for research. While there, he meets another medical student from Louisville named Emily, in a twist of fate. Thinking the confrontation "meant to be", Marty is heartbroken because of, he thinks, his appearance. Three years later and morphed into a different and lean person, Marty runs into Emily. This time she doesn't recognize him at all. Using this to his advantage and not revealing who he is, Marty embarks on a journey of revenge to win back his confidence, only to find he's on a journey to self discovery . . .

An American who has a Cuban father and American mother is pulled between the tension of these two countries. His Cuban family states, “Cuba isn’t Cuba anymore.” His family has no doubt that he is also Cuban to the point they don’t really understand why he wants to go – they almost forget that he has never been.

The theme of paradoxes occurs in his identity and present in the name of his hotel: Ambos Mundos - Both Worlds. Ultimately, the question is what can bring these two worlds together?
